Line 02 Quick tools
Line 03 Record retention

What to keep, and for how long.

The shredder can be as dangerous as the shoebox. The short version of the rules:

RecordKeep forWhy
Filed tax returnsForeverProof of filing; the IRS has no statute of limitations on unfiled returns
Supporting documents (W‑2s, 1099s, receipts, deductions)7 yearsCovers the audit window, including the 6‑year rule for substantial underreporting
Home purchase & improvement recordsOwnership + 7 yearsEstablishes basis when you sell
Investment & brokerage recordsSale + 7 yearsDocuments gains, losses, and basis
Business payroll & employment tax records7 yearsIRS requires at least 4; employment disputes can reach further
Business asset & depreciation recordsDisposal + 7 yearsSupports depreciation taken over the asset's life
Bank & credit card statements7 yearsBackstop when a receipt is missing

General guidance, not a substitute for advice on your situation — some records (legal, estate, contested matters) should be kept longer. Ask before you shred.
